Three houses stand side by side on California Avenue in Venice, and they're known as the Glass Ladies. Maya is the botanical one. Designer Alon Zakoot conceived the trio as a modern Venice answer to San Francisco's Painted Ladies, but gave each sister her own personality. Maya became the Lady of Botanica—a Riviera-meets-Tulum fantasy filled with tropical references, glass, greenery, texture and color. That's already a great story. Then you step inside and things get even more playful. A staircase becomes sculpture. A botanical wall turns an outdoor room into a little jungle. There's a saltwater pool, theater, rooftop deck and an underwater window looking into the pool. Venice doesn't need another anonymous white modern house. Maya shows up wearing something much more interesting.

What we love

The personality. This house has a name, and weirdly, it deserves one. The entrance rises in glass and steel. Exotic patterns and textures start immediately. The staircase becomes an art piece. The kitchen gets a double-waterfall island and opens directly toward the indoor-outdoor lounge. Then comes the greenery. Mature palms. Botanical wall. Tropical references. The whole thing has a Tulum-by-way-of-Venice mood without becoming a theme park. And we absolutely love the underwater pool window. You're sitting in the theater downstairs and can look through glass into the swimming pool. Is that necessary? Absolutely not. Is it fun? Absolutely. Then take everyone upstairs to the rooftop for 360-degree views across Los Angeles.

Keep in mind

Maya is expressive. Color, pattern, tropical elements, glass and architectural gestures are everywhere. If you want quiet beige minimalism, another house may suit you better. This is also multi-level Venice living rather than estate living.

Work Mode

Five bedrooms give you flexibility, but we'd claim a room early. The rest of the house contains enough visual distractions to turn "working from home" into a questionable concept.

The brag

Joe B. lens:
An underwater window from the theater into the pool? I'm in. I also love that the three Glass Ladies were intentionally given different personalities. Maya is the tropical sister. It feels playful and completely Venice.
Joe R. lens:
Five bedrooms and five-and-a-half baths in Venice is useful, and there's a junior primary downstairs in addition to the main primary upstairs. That gives two couples much better bedroom parity than you'd expect in a city house.
Together we agree:
Maya isn't merely a modern Venice house. She's a character.

Getting around

This is where the Glass Ladies story gets even better. You're in Venice near Abbot Kinney, restaurants, boutiques and the beach, so the neighborhood becomes part of the stay rather than something you drive across town to visit. Maya is close enough to Venice's beaches, restaurants and shops that walking can be part of everyday life.
