Opening Snapshot

From the moment you pass through the gates, Sonoma Lomitas Avenue feels less like a home and more like a private estate lifted from another era. Originally built in the late 1800s as Californian Victorian and expanded over generations, this is one of the most singular properties we’ve experienced in Wine Country. The scale is cinematic. The setting is immersive. And the feeling, especially as you wander the stone paths, gardens, verandas, and fountains, is that you’ve stepped into a bygone version of Sonoma where wealth was quiet, land was abundant, and homes were built to impress for centuries. There’s an undeniable throwback glamour here that kept reminding us of Falcon Crest, that same sense of sprawling opulence, drama, and old-world power (minus the scheming). With six (or maybe seven) bedrooms, resort-level amenities, and grounds that seem to unfold endlessly, Sonoma Lomitas Avenue delivers a rare experience: total privacy, total scale, and total immersion just minutes from downtown Sonoma.

What we love

This property was built to entertain and it still does so effortlessly. The outdoor amenities alone rival a private resort: a massive pool with one of the most memorable diving boards we’ve ever seen (a dramatic stone slab jutting out like something straight from a Wile E. Coyote cartoon), a hot tub tucked inside a gazebo, and a full pool pavilion complete with outdoor kitchen, BBQ, showers, sauna, steam room, estate gardens, and fountains that seem to appear around every corner. Inside, the home continues to impress with enormous living spaces, a true theater room, a chef’s kitchen stocked with every appliance imaginable, and thoughtful family-friendly features like separate boys’ and girls’ bunk rooms each with four beds and real personality. The historic details are everywhere: leaded-glass transom windows above nearly every doorway, generous proportions, and craftsmanship you simply don’t see anymore. Despite its size, the home feels deeply personal. You can tell it has been loved, lived in, and thoughtfully evolved over time and that energy carries through the entire experience. And a fun design element, Moroccan inspired light fixtures adorn almost every room. I was not expecting that!

Keep in mind

This is a historic estate, not a freshly minted design-forward build and that’s very much part of its charm. At roughly 130+ years old, Sonoma Lomitas Ave carries the honest character of a home that’s lived a full life. You can expect a few gently uneven floors, the occasional creaky door, and other quirks that come with a true period property. For guests who love historic homes, these details add soul and authenticity; for those who prefer perfectly level floors and hotel-new precision, this may not be the right fit. The interiors have been lovingly updated, but some furnishings and finishes do reflect their age. They’re high quality and elegant, just not trend-driven. Outdoors, the grounds are vast - acres and acres - and while much of the stonework, pathways, and gardens are spectacular, certain areas show a more natural, slightly untamed look. Many of the walkways are intentionally designed with cracks and gaps for plantings like lavender and flowering ground cover; when meticulously maintained, it’s magical, but when less tended, it can feel a bit rustic around the edges. None of this detracts from the experience, but it’s worth knowing this is an estate with patina, not polish. Upstairs, the home office doubles as a flexible seventh bedroom, which we love for larger groups needing extra space. That said, it’s directly off the primary suite and shares the primary bathroom, so it’s best suited for close family members or guests you’re very comfortable with, as privacy is more limited in this configuration.

The brag

Work Mode:
Joe B. lens:
This house is pure old-school grandeur. It feels like the kind of place built for hosting generations: big dinners, long summers, and memorable weekends. The scale, the stonework, the gardens, the indoor-outdoor flow, it all speaks to a time when homes were expressions of legacy. I also love the whispers of history here, including stories connecting the property to the early Spanish settlers of Sonoma, even if they remain unverified. That sense of mystery only adds to the romance.
Joe R. lens:
From a livability standpoint, this is an entertainer’s dream. You’ve got room for huge groups, kids, friends, family, everyone has space to spread out. The bunk rooms are brilliant, the pool setup is next-level, and the estate layout makes it feel like you’re on your own private compound. And, on top of all of that, a dedicated office. It’s hard to believe something this expansive sits so close to town.
Together we agree:
This is one of those rare properties where the experience is the headline. You don’t just stay here, you live here, fully.

Getting around

Despite its private, estate-like feel, Sonoma Lomitas Ave is just minutes from the heart of downtown Sonoma and the historic plaza. Wineries, restaurants, tasting rooms, and shops are all an easy drive away, making it simple to balance seclusion with convenience. You feel worlds away yet you’re never far from anything you’d want.

Joe-Tested,
Joe-Approved

A one-of-a-kind historic estate that delivers scale, soul, and serious wow-factor. If you’ve ever wanted to step into another era of Wine Country living this is it.
