Malibu houses can sometimes feel as though they are competing with the ocean. Sea Vista doesn't need to. The home sits on roughly seven-tenths of an acre and gives you both ocean views and a proper pool and spa, which means the day doesn't have to revolve around getting down to the sand. Inside, the hardwood floors and fireplace add warmth to what could otherwise become another polished coastal rental. There's a bar, open living areas and a kitchen built for a group rather than just looking good in photographs. But we keep coming back to the age of the house. 1957. That's Elvis on the radio, tail fins on Cadillacs and California's postwar optimism in full swing. We're not suggesting the house is a time capsule—it isn't—but knowing when it was built gives the place context. Malibu was still becoming Malibu. It's fun to imagine being here in 1957, before Malibu became the international shorthand for coastal luxury it is today. Surf during the day, come home sandy, doors open, music playing, and spend the evening outside with the Pacific in the distance. There's something about Sea Vista that lets you borrow a little of that earlier, looser Malibu—before every hillside seemed destined for a trophy house. We like having a little of that history beneath all the modern comforts.
