Sunset Crest has been watching Los Angeles reinvent itself since 1935, and we like that about it. The house has been thoroughly updated, but it hasn't been scrubbed into another anonymous glass box. Wide-plank oak floors, warm contemporary interiors and a gated hillside setting give it the polish you'd expect above the Sunset Strip while preserving the feeling that there was a house here long before Instagram discovered infinity pools. The current residence has four bedrooms, five baths, a pool and city-light views, but the story for us is the balance: older bones, modern comfort and a scale that still feels like a home. Sunset Crest feels less like checking into a trophy house and more like borrowing the Hollywood Hills life from someone who already figured it out.

What we love

The renovation doesn't appear to have fought the house. The oak floors warm everything up, the open layout makes the older footprint work for modern living, and the pool and private patios give the property multiple ways to be outside. With four bedrooms rather than seven or eight, Sunset Crest also feels more intimate than many of its neighbors. There's something we like about that restraint. You can spend the afternoon beside the pool, get ready for dinner on Sunset, then come back and see the city lights without feeling as though you're returning to a corporate retreat center. It's sophisticated, but still residential.

Keep in mind

This is a 1935 hillside house that has been modernized, not new construction. That's part of its character, but guests wanting enormous open volumes and ultra-modern architecture should understand the distinction. The Sunset Plaza roads also make this a driving-first location despite how close the Strip looks on a map.

Work Mode

A dedicated office gives Sunset Crest one of the features that matters most after the first vacation-like week ends. The house can shift back into normal life without the dining room becoming headquarters.

The brag

I like that 1935 is still part of the story. The renovation gives you the modern comfort, but the house hasn't lost all sense of age. There are enough new glass boxes in these hills. This feels warmer.

The city-light views are what get me here. I like a modern house, but I also like that Sunset Crest keeps some warmth and history rather than feeling sterile. Add a pool and a dedicated office and this is an easy place to settle into.

Getting around

The Sunset Strip and West Hollywood sit immediately below the house, with Beverly Hills, Hollywood and the Hollywood Bowl all easy outings by car. The steep hillside setting means we wouldn't sell this on walking; the luxury is being close to the action and then climbing back above it.
