Opening Snapshot

The front door is bronze, a sunburst taller than anyone in your group, and it opens onto a house with almost no right angles. The first walk-through happens in a hush, then a happy scatter: twelve-sided rooms, wood-paneled ceilings, walls of glass with the Valley laid out behind them, and, sunk into the middle of the main lounge, a conversation pit that one person claims immediately and refuses to leave. The first hours here are spent getting cheerfully lost. There are two kitchens, so the coffee question becomes philosophical. There is a guest house, so the grandparents or the night owls get a wing of their own. It suits a big group with an eye for design and a soft spot for the strange, because this is less a house you stay in than a piece of architecture that lets you sleep over.

What we love

Hey Steve McQueen, is that your Mustang in the driveway? Encino Via Vallarta has that effect. Designed by architect Donald G. Park, this extraordinary mid-century home feels like someone preserved a particularly glamorous slice of 1970s Los Angeles and then quietly updated everything necessary to let us live there today. Start with the front door: a towering bronze sunburst that looks more movie set than suburban Encino. Behind it, the geometry gets even better. Twelve-sided rooms, soaring wood-paneled ceilings, walls of glass, and, at the center of it all, a sunken conversation pit practically demanding a bottle of scotch and Robert Redford. Then you start noticing the wonderfully weird details. A pink-and-purple kitchen. A sunken red-tile primary tub that looks ready for a Bond villain. Rooms that refuse to be square just because most rooms are. This isn't a house that merely references another era. It lets you play in it. Bring your best sunglasses, invent your own backstory, and spend a month living like Hollywood never left the seventies.

Keep in mind

The architecture is the star. Donald G. Park didn't design a conventional box and decorate it with mid-century furniture. The geometry shapes the entire experience, creating soaring ceilings, unexpected angles, enormous windows, and rooms that continually open toward the landscape. And thank goodness nobody renovated the personality out of it. We love the sunken conversation pit, wood-paneled ceilings, tile roof, bronze sunburst entry, and all the gloriously specific period details. Even the pink-and-purple kitchen makes us smile. It is playful and slightly outrageous in exactly the way great 1970s California houses should be. Yet this isn't a time capsule. Two full kitchens, multiple lounges, a game room with billiards and ping pong, seven bedrooms, and a separate two-bedroom guest house give a large group plenty of ways to spread out. Six of the seven bedrooms even have king beds, a serious win when several couples travel together. Outside, the pool and manicured grounds open toward the hills. But for once, the view doesn't have to carry the house. Via Vallarta would be memorable even if you closed every curtain.

Work Mode

There is no dedicated office, so remote workers will need to improvise. But the good news is there is alot of room. The second kitchen can absorb a laptop without taking over the main household, and multiple living spaces provide alternatives for calls. For a heavy work month requiring several closed-door offices, however, this wouldn't be our first choice.

The brag

Joe B. lens:
I could give every visitor the full architectural tour and probably enjoy it more each time. Donald G. Park took geometry, structure, light, and the California landscape and created something completely original. The sunburst door, twelve-sided rooms, conversation pit, tile roof—I love all of it. You couldn't replace this with another modern box and improve the property.
Joe R. lens:
Six king beds. As a tall guy, that gets my attention immediately. Bring several couples and almost nobody gets stuck negotiating over the compromise bed. I'll take mine after a scotch in the conversation pit—and if Robert Redford happens to show up, we'll make room..
Together we agree:
Via Vallarta is weird, glamorous, playful, and completely unforgettable. Architecture this personal could easily feel precious. Instead, this house practically dares you to fill it with people and have some fun.

Getting around

Encino gives you a more residential version of Los Angeles, with Ventura Boulevard, Studio City, Sherman Oaks, restaurants, groceries, and everyday necessities nearby. Canyon routes put the Westside within reach, while the Valley makes daily life relatively easy. Via Vallarta creates so much of its own world, though, that leaving can feel like breaking character.

Joe-Tested,
Joe-Approved

Give everyone a 1970s Hollywood alter ego for the night. Someone's Robert Redford. Someone's Faye Dunaway. Someone inevitably insists on being James Bond. Put on something fabulous, claim the conversation pit, and let the house do the rest. If by the end of the night you've created an entire backstory about the diabolical villain who once lived here and what exactly he was plotting from that red-tile tub Via Vallarta passed.
