From the road, we'll be honest: Los Angeles Sunset Plaza Lions isn't much to look at. A lot of gray concrete sits directly against a tight bend in Sunset Plaza Drive, and there's almost nothing about the arrival that hints at what is waiting on the other side of the front door. Then you realize what they managed to build here. You enter at the top of a three-level home that drops two more floors into a Hollywood Hills canyon. Suddenly the concrete façade makes a little more sense. This is one of those wonderfully improbable Los Angeles sites where you wonder how anyone built a house here at all, much less one with a pool, gardens, wraparound decks, and an entire rooftop devoted to outdoor living. And that roof changes everything. Head upstairs and Los Angeles opens around you, city in one direction, ocean in the other, with homes clinging to the hillsides all around. We love that you can see them. This isn't some secluded mountaintop retreat. You're living in the beehive that is the Hollywood Hills, with the Sunset Strip buzzing just below. You're not escaping Los Angeles here. You're living right in the middle of it—and getting one hell of a rooftop in the process.

What we love

The rooftop is the showstopper. Taking essentially the entire roof and turning it into an outdoor living space was a brilliant move on a site where usable land is precious. There's an outdoor kitchen, room to entertain, enormous views, and one particularly cool architectural detail: a skylight cut into the deck that looks directly down into the living space below. The rest of the house unfolds vertically. Floor-to-ceiling glass keeps Los Angeles present throughout the main living areas, while wraparound decks create different places to step outside as you descend through the home. And each level has a slightly different personality. The rooftop wants a crowd. The main living spaces are open and social. Down below, the Zen garden and spa disappear into greenery. Add a wine cellar and private movie theater, and suddenly a house built on a challenging site has a surprising number of places to spend an evening. We especially love the contrast. Up on the roof, you're surrounded by Los Angeles. Down in the garden, the house tries to make the city disappear.

Keep in mind

This is a three-level hillside house, and the layout reflects it. You enter at the top and move down through the home toward the lower-level pool and gardens, so stairs are part of everyday life. The street-facing side is stark and sits directly against Sunset Plaza Drive. Don't expect a grand landscaped arrival; this house saves its drama for the other side. One bedroom is currently configured as an office or den, so a group needing all five bedrooms for sleeping should confirm the setup. The owner or property manager may also request access with at least 24 hours' notice for vendors or occasional showings, which is worth knowing for a longer stay.

Work Mode

The office/den gives this house a legitimate place to work, and the separate downstairs suite provides another option when multiple calls collide. The wraparound decks aren't bad for a casual call either. Just be warned: once people start migrating toward the rooftop, your workday is probably over.

The brag

I wouldn't choose this house for its curb appeal. I'd choose it because of what they accomplished behind that façade. Look at the site from the road and it feels almost unbuildable. Yet somehow the house drops three levels into the canyon, finds room for a pool and gardens below, opens its living spaces toward the views, and then recaptures essentially the entire roof as an outdoor deck. That's the kind of problem-solving I love about Los Angeles architecture.

Give me the rooftop. Outdoor kitchen, huge views, and the Sunset Strip right down the hill. I'd have people over constantly. This isn't the house where I want to disappear from Los Angeles. I want to go out in it, meet people, and then bring everyone back here.

Los Angeles Sunset Plaza Lions isn't about getting away from Los Angeles. It's about getting as much Los Angeles as possible—above you, below you, around you, and waiting just down the hill.

Getting around

This is where the address earns its keep. Sunset Boulevard and West Hollywood are minutes away, putting some of LA's most famous nightlife, restaurants, hotels, and entertainment within easy reach. Catch an up-and-coming comic at the Comedy Store, see who's playing at the Viper Room, or have drinks at Pendry West Hollywood. Then climb back into the hills and finish the night on your own rooftop.

Spend one night doing Hollywood properly. Drinks on Sunset, comedy or live music afterward, and absolutely no rush to get home. Then head back up the hill and take everyone straight to the rooftop. Open a bottle, fire up the outdoor kitchen, and look out over the city you just spent the night exploring. If the after-party ends up being better than the party, Los Angeles Sunset Plaza Lions passed.
