Carolwood is one of those Los Angeles street names that already carries a little mythology. Walt Disney lived on Carolwood, and generations of Hollywood royalty, executives and extraordinary estates have occupied this pocket of Holmby Hills. So when the gates open at Carolwood Estate, we’re hoping for something with a little grandeur. It delivers. The renovated Modern Tuscan residence rises into a roughly 40-foot entry, then spreads into formal rooms, terraces, gardens, lawns, pool, spa and a separate pool house. This isn’t modern LA trying to erase the idea of an estate. It’s leaning into it. Library with a bar. Formal dining. Multiple family rooms. Courtyard. Guest accommodations. Staff space. Gym and sauna. The house feels designed for the old-fashioned idea that an estate should contain an entire world behind its gates. On Carolwood Drive, that feels exactly right.

What we love

The sense of occasion begins with that 40-foot entry, but Carolwood isn’t just one giant room followed by a bunch of ordinary ones. There’s a library with a bar, formal dining, multiple family rooms with fireplaces, a gym, sauna, pool house, separate guest accommodations, rolling lawns and mature gardens. The current renovation has brought modern systems and a more contemporary level of comfort into the property without stripping away the estate character. We particularly like the courtyard. With homes this large, intimate outdoor rooms matter. Not every moment needs to happen beside the pool or in the biggest room in the house. Sometimes you want a quiet table surrounded by greenery.

Keep in mind

Carolwood is formal. If your idea of Los Angeles is barefoot Venice or casual Malibu, this is a completely different fantasy. It’s also a very large property with multiple living areas and accommodations spread across the estate. For the right group, that’s the luxury.

Work Mode

This is almost absurdly well suited to an executive stay. Between the library, guest accommodations and sheer number of rooms, serious work can happen without turning the main residence into an office.

The brag

I love the old-school estate feeling here. Forty-foot entry, library with a bar, courtyard, rolling lawn, pool house. It feels like Carolwood Drive should feel. You come through the gates and the city disappears.

The separate guest accommodations are a big deal for a long stay. Family, staff or another couple can have real privacy, and there are enough bathrooms and living areas that a large group isn’t constantly on top of each other.

Getting around

Holmby Hills puts you between Beverly Hills, Bel Air and Westwood, with Century City and UCLA nearby. This is quiet, prestigious residential Los Angeles, so walking isn’t the story. The advantage is how centrally the estate sits within the Westside while feeling completely removed behind the gates.
