Rexford Modern feels like somebody asked an art collector to design a Beverly Hills hotel and then forgot to invite any other guests. The contemporary estate is more than 13,000 square feet, but size isn't what you notice first. It's the materials, the drama and the almost gallery-like confidence of the place. Rare wood flooring meets custom marble inlays, enormous glass doors disappear toward the pool, and a sculptural staircase connects spaces that feel designed to make an entrance. The Boffi kitchen adds Carrara marble, black basalt and Gaggenau appliances, while downstairs there's a movie theater and wellness space. Rexford isn't subtle. Beverly Hills probably wasn't the place to start looking for subtle anyway.

What we love

The house commits to the idea. Nothing feels halfway. The foyer is dramatic, the ceilings soar, the glass disappears, and the primary suite gets its own fireplace, wet bar, dressing room, dual spa-like bathrooms and direct access to a rooftop deck. There's also an elevator, guest house and oversized garage. What saves Rexford from feeling like an enormous showroom is the outdoor connection. Open the electronic glass walls and the interior flows directly toward the pool and terraces. The house may look like a private gallery, but somebody remembered that people in Beverly Hills occasionally want to swim.

Keep in mind

This is a bold, highly designed contemporary estate. If you want understated California casual, warm farmhouse or old-Hollywood romance, Rexford is playing an entirely different game. Its scale is also substantial, so this makes the most sense for travelers who enjoy a house with a sense of occasion.

Work Mode

The hotel-style office is serious enough for an executive stay, and the size of the property makes it easy for work and household life to coexist without colliding.

Getting around

This is Beverly Hills Flats living, which is very different from being tucked up in the canyons. Rodeo Drive, the Golden Triangle, restaurants, cafés and shopping are all close enough to become part of everyday life, and this is one of those Beverly Hills homes where walking out for lunch or a little shopping can actually be part of the routine.
